A Missoula shop, not a chain

Here at Missoula Electrician, we're a couple of trucks and a shop. You get the same electricians every time, and you can ask them questions without a dispatcher in the middle.

We'd rather fix the thing you called about than sell you a package. If a $150 repair solves it, we'll tell you that, even though a panel upgrade pays better. That's been enough to keep us busy on word of mouth, and we'd like to keep it that way.

Is the house older than the wiring can handle?

A lot of the places around the University District, the Northside and the lower Rattlesnake were wired when a house ran a radio and three lamps. Now there's a dishwasher, a window AC unit, a gaming PC and somebody charging a car.

We work on those houses constantly. Knob-and-tube in the attic, two-prong outlets, a panel with no room left in it. You don't have to fix all of it at once, and we'll tell you honestly what's urgent and what can wait a few years.

Winter doesn't go easy on a house

Space heaters on old circuits, a well pump that has to keep running, and the odd wind storm that drops power out toward Bonner and Clinton. If you want a generator hookup or a surge protector in before it gets cold, fall is the time to call.

Common questions

What do you charge?

Service call starts at $89 and covers finding the problem. Most small jobs land between $145 and $400. Panel upgrades usually run $2,400 to $4,000. You get the number before we start.

How soon can you come?

Usually a couple of days. We're a small shop, so in a cold snap it can stretch to a week. If something's sparking or the panel feels warm, tell us when you call and we'll move you up.

Do I really need a new panel?

Often, no. If breakers only trip when the heater and microwave are both going, that's a circuit problem. A fuse box, a 60-amp service, or a Federal Pacific panel is a different story.

Do you pull permits?

Yes, when the job calls for one. Panel swaps, service changes and new circuits generally do. Swapping a light fixture doesn't.

Is knob-and-tube a problem?

It can be, especially where someone buried it in insulation or spliced into it. It's not automatically an emergency. We'll look and tell you where you actually stand.

How far out do you go?

Missoula and the valley: Lolo, Frenchtown, East Missoula, Bonner, Milltown, Clinton, Florence, Stevensville. Seeley Lake if we can group it with another job.
